Chriso's report on Matt Coopers open (brisbane)

Here are the details about the tourny.
First up was conan in the 88-98kg white belt/beginers gi division, his first oppenent was a white belt 4 stripes from a bris bjj school, straight of the bat conan pulled gaurd,it was a great match with lots of transitions but conan never looked in trouble and keeped control the entire match,he won 12-3 on points and advanced to the next round. His next opponent had only been training for a few months, conan easily took him down mounted him and taped him with a cuff & sleave choke, with that win conan had won his first ever bjj event.
Next up was me in the77-87kg blue belt/intermediate gi div,my first opponent was blue belt 1 stripe from the same school as conans first opp.It was a really hard match which dispite my best efforts stayed on our feet for a couple of min until i got a single leg trip and ended up in half gaurd,he eventually got full gaurd, then i managed to get my old faithful pin his arm behind his back guard pass,i got to half guard and applied an absolute monsterous forearm choke but as most people that day he refused to tap.after another few min of guard work it went back to our feet were it finished off,i won (just) 2-0 and advanced to the next round.
My next opponent was a tall bit of gear also from bris (who i just saw distroy the guy i just wrestled),he came out fast and strong trying various take downs and throws, after a breif scramble he was on his back with open guard,i passed (easily, all the practice with stu guard paid off) and got mount,i slowed down and maintaned control before applying my favorate move the head arm choke,i won with the tapout and managed to win my first comp at blue belt level.
Next up was no gi submission wrestling, conan went first against a very skilled guy from a mma school in bris, conan shot in imediatly but was stoped with a good sprawl, put on his back and tapped with a head arm choke, that was the only person in the division so that was the end of conans day,he did exstreamly well and walked away with a first and a second in his very first comp.
I was on next but with the lack of competitors in my division all the guys from the blue belt division went in together,My first opponent was a bjj blue belt 1 stripe from a mma club in bris,we felt each other out for a bit before we ended on the ground with me in his half guard, after a few attemps i passed to side then north/south trying for the kimira which he defended well,i was able to get his back from there and apply a body triangle and rear naked choke forcing the tapout.
My next opponent was a no gi guy from bris, he was much lighter than me(around 72-75kg) but he made up for it with flexability and will,he shot in on me straight away and i was able to sprawl and apply the meanest anaconda choke ever and rolled to finish it off,we rolled off the mat and after a breif restart(same posi) i tried to finished with all my streagth(bad idea, didnt have choke deep enough) he got out pulled guard and started attacking, after many scrambles i managed to get mount 4 points but could not finish,he escaped, more scrambling with him getting 2 "takedowns" at 2 points a peice finishing the 6 min regulation time a draw.Needless to say i was spewing and stupidly tired but we had to go 3 more min to get a winner.I started off very slow but somehow managed to get his back getting 4 points,he escaped turning into my guard where i held on for dear life untill i was warned(stalling),i went for a last all out applying a triangle, falling short, but getting on top from it where time ran out, i managed to hold on to win 4-0 and win my first ever no gi comp.
A few exra things of note, there was around 50-60 competitors men & woman,3-4 main clubs, vincent perrys,2 bjj schools from bris & a mma school also from bris. This was the bris area warm up for melbourne nationals, weights went from 60kg-99kg&over,it was held at whitehall college bris

Hope you enjoy my little - Chriso
