Coffs Coast Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts located in Coffs Harbour NSW Australia

March '06' Budo North Coast Open.
This was Chris & Scott's first tournament of any kind but they were able to keep the nerves at bay long enough to pull out some great wins.
First up was Scott in the 76-85kg division, his first opponent was a first degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, after a brief clinch Scotty was able to get back control and a rear naked choke for the tapout, not bad for a first timer with only a few months training under his belt. For his second match Scotty's opponent grabbed him in a headlock straight off the bat,Scott was able to roll his opponent over and escape the headlock ending up in the guard where he remained for the rest of the match winning by 3-0 on points. In his final match Scott came right out and pulled guard,he kept his opponent busy going for armbars & triangles continuously,he eventually got a basic sweep and started attacking from front control but after a scramble ended up pulling guard again where they stayed for the rest of time,Scott clinched the win 8-0 and with that won his first grappling tournament!

Next up was Chris in the 86-95kg division,His first opponent was 3rd degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, straight off the clinch Chris was able to throw his opponent down and ended in side control, after a few minutes and some unsuccessful attempts to mount Chris moved around to front control where his opponent spun around to his knees where Chris was able to get his back and try for an armbar when the time ran out,Chris got the win 6-0 on points, great stuff from the first timer with only a few months training. For his second match Chris came out pulled guard, and performed a basic sweep ending up in the mount, after establishing control Chris went for the armbar and was able to force the tapout for the win.For his final match Chris came out firing, his opponent pulled guard which Chris immediately passed to side control, switched to mount, then applied the head-arm choke for the tapout and won his first grappling tournament.

The boys also decided to try their luck at the full contact sparring and unfortunately due to the lack of competitors Chris & Scott both had to fight a 116kg 6'4 monster.Chris drew the short straw and was up first, after a nervous start Chris relaxed and was easily able to get the win using his speed and angles.Scott was up next and with a tentative start was also able to use speed and angles to get the win.For the final the boys had to fight each other, but knowing they still had the open weight grappling division to go, they took it easy on each other getting the 1st & 2ND.

After a small rest Scott & Chris went in the open weight grappling division to finish the day out, Chris was up first and jumped straight into side control, mounted, and aplied the head-arm choke in a mater of seconds to force the tapout for the win and advanced to the next round.Scott was next and was lucky enough to get the 116kg 6'4 monster, after being man-handled for the first 30 sec Scott was able to pull guard and attempted a triangle and an arm bar which his opponent just managed to get free of,after a brief scramble Scott was able to get back control and started working for R.N.C when time ran out,Scott was able to advance to the next round with a 4-0 win.Chris's next opponent at 6'6 126kg was the biggest competitor there and with a 4th degree Black Belt in Kempo was the hardest opponent Chris had faced, his opponent pulled guard which Chris passed to side control, after a minute or two of Chris trying to maintain control, his opponent was able to get back to half guard,Chris was able to pass and get knee ride, which his opponent was able to escape and scramble where Chris was able to get back control and worked for the choke but time ran out with Chris winning by points. With that Chris won the open weight division.

At the end of the day Chris & Scott walked away with 4x1st & 2x2nd places but more importantly experience, and a fun day,Great work guys!

April 06 Gold Coast ISKA World Cup
This was Scott & Chris first major event for BJJ.First up was Chris in the 85-95kg white belt division, after a small clinch war Chris's opponent pulled guard and sfarted to work, chris started to pass the guard, after a few minutes chris broke the guard and began the single leg guard pass but left one arm in and his opponent slapped on the triangle choke, chris defended well trying to posture up but his opponent was to good and he was able to geta sweep finishing the match with a triangle from mount for the tapout.

Next up was scott in the 75-85kg white belt div.Scotts opponent showed great skill and balance with the two looking for the takedown for the first 2 min of the match, when in finally hit the ground scott ended up on the bottom in side controll,he defended well never giving up the submission but was kept there the rest of the fight,he lost the match on points. His next opponent had much more experiance and again scott did well defending from the bottom but couldent improve his position, again loseing by points.

Overall it was a great experience for the boys who had only been training a few months and went up against guys who had been training for a few years. They also had the oppatunaty to meet some great martial artists while there,Rcihard Norton,Anthony Lange,Vincent Perry & Mick Cuttajar to name a few.

At the end of the day the boys did us proud brining home a 1st and three 3rds,not bad!

Coffs Coast Jiu Jitsu is going strong. I just haven't had much of a chance to train or update the site. We are growing and regularly train at the link gym so give Stu a call

The team from Coffs Coast Jiu Jitsu couldn't all make the Mixed Martial Arts weekend in Sydney, due to some unfortunate incidents. Scott and Stu did have a wonderful time and have passed on some great stories and techniques.

Martial Arts Grading

Stuart Nairne the head instructor of Coffs Coast Jiu Jitsu graded his first official blue belt in November 07.

Stuart and the CCJJ team took Jason Brown though his paces over the grueling 90 minute grading

Jase had to demonstrate the full range of blue belt drills, sweeps, chokes, armlocks and escapes and then he had 10 X 3 minute grapples with only a 1 minute rest at the halfway point.

After a 5 year journey of on and off training in BJJ, Jase has finally been pinned down long enough to attain his Blue belt. Hopefully purple isn't that far away!

The boys are in the paper and on top of the Budo circuit.

In the King of the Hill Open they lost on points (just) to a 6.6ft 120kg giant of a man who has been grappling in no gi comps for a few years now.

Also the article aint exactly correct!. The boys have been in the ISKA world grappling comp and 2 other Budo grappling competitions and have always done well because of their passion for grappling and martial arts.

Have a look at some of the pics below!
